Text: II Samuel Chap 9
Intro:
I Sam 18 & 20 records the covenant made between David and Jonathan.
It is a picture of the covenant of grace God has made through the
finished work of the Lord Jesus. II Samuel 9 is a beautiful picture of
the fulfillment of the grace of God. Only 2 doctrines in the world:

1) Works (you do it all and get nowhere)
2) Grace (God did it all and you can have it all)
There are three main characters in this passage:
1) David the King (type of God the Father)
2) Ziba the servant (type of the Holy Ghost)
3) Mephibosheth (a type of a lost sinner)

I. THE SOURCE OF THE GRACE OF GOD

A) Initiative of Grace (vs 1 "and David said") representative of when God
said. Grace was spoken from the eternal lips of God.

B) Inquiry of Grace (vs 1 "is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul)
the sinner does not do the inquiring, God inquires about the sinner.

C) Involvement of Grace (vs 1 "that I may show him kindness for Jonathan

sake")
. Mephibosheth could not do anything for David the king.
He was not worth anything to the king. David inquired about any left
of the house of Saul because of the covenant he had made between
Jonathan and himself.

II. THE SEARCH OF THE GRACE OF GOD

A) The Person intended (vs 3 "and Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan
hath a son which is lame on his feet")

1) he was the grandson of King Saul (arch enemy of David)
2) underserving case, lame on his feet
3) name means: "a breathing shame"
4) was dropped on his head (lame as a result of a fall)
5) we are lame in sin because of a fall (Garden of Eden)

B) The Place involved (vs 4 "and the king said unto him, where is he?
And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir,
the son of Amiel, in Lodebar")
"lodebar" means "place of no bread and no pasture"
it was a wasteland and a barren land

III. THE SWEETNESS OF THE GRACE OF GOD

A) The King Fetched Him (vs 5 "then David sent, and fetched him out
of the house of Machir, the son of Amiel, in Lodebar")
"fetched" means "to gather up"
there was the chariot of grace, mission of mercy,
there was the opening of the door and the shedding of light
there was the trip back and sights Mephibosheth had never seen

B) The King Forgave Him (vs 7 "and will restore")

C) The King Favored Him
Even thou he was:

1. Undeserving (
that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as
I am")

D) The King Fed Him (vs 11 "as for Mephibosheth, said the King, he
shall eat at my table, as one of the king's sons")
before the king found him, he was eating off the floor

IV. THE SECURITY OF THE GRACE OF GOD

A) Provisions (vs 12 "and all that dwelt in the house of Ziba were ser-vants")

B) Protection (vs 13 "and did eat continually at the king's table"
