The Call of a God Called Preacher
Titus 1:1
Introduction:
In the course of the ministry preachers may preach to thousands and thousands of people. Most, however, are lost and headed for a devils hell. Preachers preach and preach may not see the results of their work. But there is a time when someone to whom the preacher preached the Gospel to bears the fruit of God and this becomes pleasant fruit to the preacher.
In the case of Paul, who preached the Gospel for years and years, he saw the fruit of this ministry in the life of one his converts named Titus. His name just so happens to mean pleasant. Titus was a man who loved the Lord and wanted to serve Him. In this message I would like to show you a few of the characteristics of a God called man. He can serve to us preachers and Christians alike as a Model of a God Called Man.

Sermon #3
The Commission Of A God Called Preacher
(Learning About Damaging Dilemmas)
(Titus 1:10-16)
Introduction: Titus was left at Crete by the Apostle Paul for two reasons and they are mentioned in verse 5 of this first chapter. He is to set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders. Along the way of doing this, Paul warns Titus of some problems or dilemmas that need to be addressed.
I. The Dilemma Of Deceit
vs. 10-11
(Titus 1:10) For there are many
unruly and vain talkers
and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:
A. Detailing of The Deceivers
There are times in the ministry when the
preacher has to confront people and call them out.
Here Paul shows us that Titus was to call to mind these types of people
who caused deception.
1. They Are Perverse
(unruly)
These people who were deceptive in their ways had no rule over them and they were disobedient.
2. They Are Profitless
(Vain)
These people who were deceptive were vain talkers, thus making their speeches of no real gain, making them profitless.
3. They Are Phonies
(deceivers)
These deceivers were fakes, they were phonies. God wants us to be in subjection to Him, speak as the oracles of God, and be real to both God and man.
B.
Dethroning Of The Deceptions
Paul writes to Titus and tells this young preacher that the mouths of these men must be…
1. Stopped
This means that what was being said must not continued
2. Shut Up
This means that what was being said must cease
C.
Destruction Of The Deceptions
1. The Deceivers
Ravage Houses
subvert whole houses
They ruined the houses, literally turned the houses upside down.
2. The Deceivers Ransack Houses for filthy lucre’s sake
They taught the people false things just for dirty money
II. The Dilemma Of
Degradation
vs. 12-15
A. The Report Of their Degradation
(Titus 1:12) One of themselves,
even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts,
slow bellies.
1. The Commentary Of Their Sinfulness
Epimenides, who was
considered a prophet amongst them. See Laertius, and Cicero in his first book of
divination. - Geneva Study Bible on
Titus chapter 1
2. The Conduct Of Their Selfishness
(The Text Gives Us The Comments On Each Sin)
1)
Liars (alway liars)
2).
Lewd (evil beast)
3).
Lazy (slow
bellies) (fat)
B. The
Rebuke Of Their Degradation
(Titus 1:13) This witness is true.
Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;
1. Notice The Severity Of The Rebuke
Paul says to rebuke them sharply, meaning that Titus was not be a coward, but have boldness in his rebuke
2. Notice The End Of The Rebuke
(Titus 1:13) This witness is true.
Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;
The reasoning for the sharp rebuke that they would
love the truth and not follow the falsehoods that crept in.
C. The Realm
Of Their Degradation
(Titus 1:15) Unto the pure all
things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure
; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
Realm or region of the
sinfulness was that of the mind and it showed forth into their lives.
This is true of people in general, for what is truly on the inside will
someday work it’s way out. The
Christian should bring forth the fruits of righteousness in their lives, but
there are times when we quench the Spirit of God and give heed to the flesh.
III. The Dilemma Of
Delinquency
vs. 16
A. The Declaration
Of Their Delinquency
(Titus 1:16) They profess that they
know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and
unto every good work reprobate.
Plainly the verse shows us that they say one thing and do another, sort of like a lot of us Christians.
B. The
Discrepancy
Of Their Delinquency
in
works they deny Him
There are many who in word
and tongue profess to know God, and yet in their lives and conversations deny
and reject him; their practice is a contradiction to their profession.
-Matthew Henry
C. The Disapproval Of Their
Delinquency
“Every time they are ‘put to the test’ on a
truly good work, they fail the test.”
Ruckman- Pastoral Epistles pg. 405
God wants us to be approved by Him.
These men were not due to the fact that they were not saved individuals,
therefore it is impossible to please Him.
Conclusion:
The Text is about unsaved people
but it sure does carry the saved man into thinking that he can make an
application to himself to watch what he does and to whom he does it for and for
what reward. There are some things
in this fight that we are in that are worth standing up and fighting for.
We need address the wrongs that creep in and defile our churches.
Pray that God would give the spiritual eyes to see any error that comes
upon us.

The Example Of The Elderly Men
Titus 2:2
I).
The Aged Men And Their Discipline
The elder statesmen in local assemblies are to set the example for the younger men in many ways. Let’s see from these…
A). They are not drunks. (sober)
This is not just sober-minded, but not a drinking of alcohol at all. Sober means not drunk.
B). They have dignity.
(grave)
The word grave is used here in the passage of Titus 2:2 and carries the meaning of dignity. These men are to display dignity (honor) but not just as an outward appearance, but they have it on the inside as well.
C). They are Discreet. (temperate)
These men are under control and very moderate in all things.
II).
The Aged Men And Their Disposition
Disposition is defined as the predominant or prevailing tendency of one's spirit; natural mental and emotional outlook or mood; characteristic attitude:
A). Notice their love (charity)
Charity is defined as love in action. They are to show forth the love that they have for people and not just say it.
B). Notice their longsuffering (patience) They are to have patience with the younger crowd, just like God has patience with us. Someone at some point in their life had patience with them.
III)
The Aged Men And Their Doctrine
Doctrine is defined as a belief or teaching.
A). They have a solid
faith
These men know what they believe and why.
B). They have a sure
faith
These men have a faith that no matter what comes down the pike, they can rest assure in the Lord to see them through.
C). They have a sound faith
Sound here is being whole or wholesome. They are healthy.
1)
Healthy Body
2) Healthy Belief

Sermon #2
The Example Of The Elderly Women
Titus 2:3
“The aged women likewise, that they
be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much
wine, teachers of good things;”
Introduction: The verse that we are going to deal is that of Titus 2:3. Godly women can be seen throughout the Bible. From Hannah to Mary, Anna to Priscilla. The Apostle Paul lays out some principles for the aged women in the church in order to lead the younger women along the way of godliness. Notice…
I).
The Woman’s Attitude
“behaviour
as becometh holiness”
A). She Displays Good
Behaviour
Webster
1828 Dictionary defines behaviour as this:
Manner of behaving, whether good
or bad; conduct; manners; carriage of one's self, with respect to propriety, or
morals; deportment. It expresses external appearance or action; sometimes in a
particular character; more generally in the common duties of life; as, our
future destiny depends on our behavior in this life. It may express correct or
good manners, but I doubt whether it ever expresses the idea of elegance of
manners, without another word to qualify it.
A good way for
a young woman who is trying to serve God is to see the example of godly women
that are around her. The Lord here
shows us that the aged women are to show a behaviour that becomes holiness.
B).
She Demonstrates Godly Blessedness
Holiness is what we all as
Christians should try to attain to.
As we live for God, we are to adhere to His word and live there by.
Brother Webster again states this about holiness:
The state of being holy; purity or integrity of moral character; freedom
from sin; sanctity. Applied to the Supreme Being, holiness denotes perfect
purity or integrity of moral character, one of his essential attributes.
1. Applied to human beings, holiness is purity of heart or dispositions;
sanctified affections; piety; moral goodness, but not perfect.
She, the aged woman, is to
set a godly example not only at the church house, but also in life outside the
church.
Not only can the younger
women learn from the aged women in their attitude but notice…
II).
The Woman’s Actions
“not
false accusers, not given to much wine,”
A). She is not to be a
slanderer
False accuser is a person
who falsely accuses someone. False
is defined as . Not true; not
conformable to fact; expressing what is contrary to that which exists, is done,
said or thought. A false report communicates what is not done or said. A false
accusation imputes to a person what he has not done or said. A false witness
testifies what is not true. A false opinion is not according to truth or fact.
The word is applicable to any subject, physical or moral.
ACCU'SER,
n. One who accuses or blames; an officer who prefers an accusation against
another for some offense, in the name of the government, before a tribunal that
has cognizance of the offense. So
that constitutes one as a liar, which is defined by Webster as:
1. A person who knowingly
utters falsehood; one who declares to another as a fact what he knows to be not
true, and with an intention to deceive him. The uttering of falsehood by
mistake, and without an intention to deceive, does not constitute one a liar.
B). She is noted
to be sober
The woman is not to be a drunkard.
She is not given herself (bodily or spiritually) to the drink.
Sober is defined by Webster as…
Not intoxicated or overpowered by
spiritous liquors; not drunken. The sot may at times be sober.
It is estimated that of the
15.1 million alcohol-abusing or alcohol-dependent individuals in the United
States, approximately 4.6 million (nearly one-third) are women (Taken from
WILLIAMS, G.D.; Grant, B.F.; Harford, T.C.; and Noble, B.A. Population
projections using DSM-III criteria: Alcohol abuse and dependence, 1990-2000.
Alcohol Health & Research World 13(4):366-370, 1989.)
That was 20 years ago.
Imagine what it is now!!!
Not
only are the younger women to see a godly attitude and godly actions, Notice…
III). The
Woman’s Application
“teachers
of good things”
There are some things that
the aged are to teach to the younger women.
Her application is to teach the good things that were taught to her to a
younger crowd.
A).
Character of Her Teachings
Observe the word good. There
is a lot of bad teaching going by the news media and sitcoms to lure our young
ones away from following the Lord.
But I believe if the older women lead by example and teach the younger women the
good things of the Lord, then this country could change, and that one family at
a time.
B).
Content of Her Teachings
What follows is a list, a checklist if you will, of what the good things
are that a godly woman should teach to her youngins and/or to the younger women
in the church. They are from Titus
2:4-5
1).
Alcohol free (sober v4)
2). Affectionate
(to love their husbands and children v4)
3). Attentive (discreet v 5)
4). Abstinent (chaste v 5)
5). Attendant (keeper at
home v 5)
6). Admirable (good v 5)
7). Agreeable
(obedient v 5)
Conclusion:
There is a lot laying on
the shoulders on the aged women in the church.
By the grace of God, the principles that need to be followed, can and
will be done. It is up to the older
ones to step it up.

Sermon #3
The Example Of The Elderly Statesmen
These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all
authority. Let no man despise thee.
(Titus 2:15)
I).
The Lessons Of The Pastor
“These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke…”
A). Speech That is Strong
In order for the preacher, to whom this verse is aimed at, to get what God wants for His people, this preacher must preach exactly what God says to preach. He is to do it in the power of the Holy Ghost and not with the wisdom of himself or of his own, fleshly power. The contents and principles of what this chapter holds can only come to be fruitful when it is the leadership of God and not the preacher.
B). Exhortation That Is Soft
Would you like it if the preacher always yelled at you, but what he said was a word of encouragement? Sometimes it is how you say things and not what you say. Soft speech or gentleness can go a long way.
C). Rebuke That Is Sharp
Now there are times when you have to really get into someone or you have to rebuke sin.
II).
The Leadership Of The Pastor
“…with all authority…”
A). The Preacher’s Charge
The preacher is one that is looked to by his flock to lead and guide in this wilderness below. He is to have authority in his ministry. The Authorized King James 1611 Bible is the final authority from which the preacher is preach and live and guide his live by and the flocks as well.
B). The Preacher’s Character
This can be seen in Titus chapter 1 and verses 6-13. That is not all of the characteristics of the preacher, but a good model to go by.
III).
The Liking Of The Pastor
“Let no man despise thee.”
A).
The Encouragement of Paul to Titus
Paul wants Titus to know that in all these things do not let people put you down or think lowly of you just because he is preaching from the Book. We are not to be men pleasers but would anyone really want a leader who doesn’t preach with the authority that can help them? Why would you want all people to look down or despise you? This also carries the thought that your preaching should not be that of harshness and rashness at all times. There is a time for that and a time to lift the people up.
B).
The Equipping of Paul to
Titus
In these last 2 chapters Paul is arming Titus for the long haul. We need to be reminded that this walk of life is not a sprint but a marathon.
Conclusion:
The people of today are a people that need someone to step up and give them a reality check. With T.V. and radio, and Internet telling the young and old alike that the old fashioned ways are out and you need this and you need that, there has to be someone to stand in the gap for God and declare “Thus saith the Lord.”

The Grace Of God Towards Men
Part 1
Titus 2:11-12
I).
Definition of Grace
“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,”
The word grace is defined,
by Webster’s 1828 dictionary as:
Appropriately, the free unmerited love and favor of God, the spring and
source of all the benefits men receive from him.
But looking at the verse,
this grace that has appeared
A). Grace that has a body
Grace personified is none
other than that of the Lord Jesus Christ
B). Grace that has brought
something
Grace brought salvation
with it. Salvation apart from the
Lord Jesus Christ is damnation
“The grace of God,” says
Luther, “is like a flying summer shower. It has fallen upon more than one land,
and passed on. Judea had it, and lies barren and dry. These Asiatic coasts had
it, and flung it away.”
II).
Donation of Grace
“For
God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
- John 3:16
Grace is free sovereign
favor to the ill-deserving. -
Benjamin Warfield
A). Greatest Giver is God
None like the God we serve
could outdo God when it comes to the subject of giving
B). Greatest Gift is God’s
Son
All the gifts that man has
given to each other on Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, or other occasions
combined scratches the surface of the gift that God gave to us in the person of
His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. He,
Jesus Christ, is God’s donated grace gift to us.
III).
Display of Grace
“And the Word was made
flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only
begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14
Titus 2:11 states the this
grace hath appeared. This means
that it was revealed to mankind. 1
John 1:1-2 shows us that this Life was manifested.
A). This Grace appeared to
mankind
Orthodox Jews today are
still waiting for the Messiah to show up on this earth.
As we can see from the Bible, the Messiah, Jesus Christ, has already come
and gone and is returning every shortly to take His own out of this world.
They missed Him. But for the
grace of God, God is not done with the Jewish people.
B). This Grace appeared for
mankind
He came to take away
something that mankind could not take away.
He came to take away something that the blood of bulls and goats could
not take away. This would be the
sins of all humanity. He appeared
for mankind to hang on that cross for them.
He hung on that cross for my sins that I could not take away by myself.
IV).
Dominion of Grace
Dominion is defined in the 1828 Webster’s dictionary as:
Sovereign or supreme authority; the power of governing and controlling.
The dominion of the Most High is an everlasting
dominion. Daniel 4.
2. Power to direct, control, use and dispose of at pleasure; right of possession
and use without being accountable; as the private dominion of individuals.
God is in complete control of His grace and does not need us to tell us how He
should use His grace.

No Man Demands This Grace

The Grace Of God Towards Men part 2
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men.
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should
live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for
that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our
Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from
all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good
works. These things speak, and
exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
(Titus 2:11-15)
In chapter 2, we have seen that there are some lessons that need to be taught to certain groups of people. This passage before us is not exception. Paul is admonishing Titus that the grace of God has appeared to all men and that it has taught us some principles to go by.
I).
The Characteristic Life
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath
appeared to all men. Teaching us
that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly,
righteously, and godly, in this present world;
The Life we now live after salvation is one that denies:
A). The Ungodly Lusts
Ungodly is defined as this in Webster’s Dictionary:
“Sinful; contrary to the divine commands;
as ungodly deeds. Jude 4.”
B). The Worldly Lusts
The word worldly is defined by Webster’s 1828 Dictionary
as: “Secular; temporal; pertaining to this world
or life, in contradistinction to the life to come; as worldly pleasures; worldly
affairs; worldly estate; worldly honor; worldly lusts. Titus 2.”
But we are
to live:
1). Soberly
2). Righteously
3). Godly
This example is an everyday life, not just on Sunday’s and Wednesday’s.
II).
The Coming Lord
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
The Grace of God teaches you and I that the Lord Jesus Christ is coming back
We have a-
A). Blessed Hope
This is none other than the Rapture of the Church. The Lord promised He would come back in Acts 1, John 14, 1 Thessalonians 4, Revelation 4, and 1 Corinthians 15. He is coming back. We have a lively hope because of the grace of God.
B). Beautiful Home
Because of the Grace of God, we have Heaven as our home. It is not a thought in our head, it is not just a dreamy place, it is a real place where the Great God and Saviour will take us saved folk to.
C). Benevolent Helper
The Great and Saviour Jesus Christ is the mode of Grace. He is Grace in the flesh. He died for our sins in our place to give us this grace and it’s blessings.
III). The
Conditions Of Labor
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from
all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
The Conditions for us to be a laborer for God is
A) You Must First Be
Redeemed
B). You Must First Be
Reconciled
C). You Must First Be
Regenerated
We are a set apart people who are zealous of good works. The reason why we are zealous of good works is because of grace, because He saved us, He redeemed us and He is return for us soon. Do you know this grace whereof that I speak?
The work has been done on
the cross. The blood has been shed. The price has been paid. The only thing left
is for the forgiveness to be received by you.
I could offer to give you a
hundred dollar bill by holding it out with my hand. But until you reach out and
take it from me, it will never be yours. The same is true with God's
forgiveness. Until you receive it, it's not yours. (Kent Crockett, The 911
Handbook, Peabody, MA: Hendrickson Publishers, 2003, 55)
Cannot add your works
If you add your works to
the cross, you subtract God's grace from the cross. Salvation is 100% grace.
--Kent Crockett

The Goodness Of God Towards Men
Titus 2:14
“Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify
unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”
I).
Observe God’s Dispensing
The word gave
carries this meaning a prolonged form of
a primary verb (which is used as an alternative in most of the tenses); to
give (used in a very wide application, properly or by implication, literal
or figurative; greatly modified by the connection) :- adventure, bestow, bring
forth, commit, deliver (up), give, grant, hinder, make, minister, number, offer,
have power, put, receive, set, shew, smite (+ with the hand), strike (+ with the
palm of the hand), suffer, take, utter, yield.
Strong's Greek & Hebrew
Dictionary.
A). Who Gave?
God gave.
The Giver of Life knew we were in trouble and knew that we could not help
ourselves, that we could not save ourselves.
His motive for giving was that of LOVE.
John 3:16, Romans 8:37, Ephesians 2:4, 5:2, II Thess. 2:16, 1 John
4:10,11,19, Revelation 1:5.
B). What was Given?
In trueness it was God
giving mankind of Himself.
The Second Person of the Triune God, God the Son, came into this as a man, and
died on a Roman Cross as our sacrifice and substitute.
He alone could have this feat and not sinful man, for we are in and of
ourselves sinners and headed for hell without hope and without God.
Until that day in history when God intervened.
God was manifest in the flesh!!!!
(1 Timothy 3:16, John 1:14)
C). Who for?
It was for you and I that
the Lord God sent His only begotten in this world.
It was for our sins that this Holy God came and gave of Himself.
II).
Observe God’s Delivering
Redemption is defined by Webster as
To purchase back; to ransom; to liberate or
rescue from captivity or bondage, or from any obligation or liability to suffer
or to be forfeited, by paying an equivalent; as, to redeem prisoners or captured
goods; to redeem a pledge.
It is also stated In
theology, to rescue and deliver from the bondage of sin and the penalties of
God's violated law, by obedience and suffering in the place of the sinner, or by
doing and suffering that which is accepted in lieu of the sinner's obedience.
A). The Sinners Ransom
The death and shed blood of
the Lord Jesus Christ has bought the believer back from sin.
B). The Sinners Release
The moment a person
believes on Christ, Christ literally washes him from his sins with His blood
(Revelation 1:5), cleansing his soul from all sin (1 John 1:7), and supplying
him with an eternal redemption (Romans 3:24; Hebrews 9:12). Furthermore, through
Christ's redemption the saint has been completely freed from the curse of the
law (Galatians 3:13), from all iniquity (Titus 2:14), and from his vain life (1
Peter 1:18).
C). The Sinners Rescue
"When I was a pastor of a
country church, a farmer didn't like the sermons I preached on hell. He said,
'Preach about the meek and lowly Jesus.' I said, 'That's where I got my
information about hell.'" --Vance Havner
We were on our way to Hell until Jesus Christ stepped on the scene.
He rescued us from Hell.
People today want to hear about the goodness of God and they don’t want to hear
about the wrath of God.

Observe God’s Delighting
“purifies unto himself…”
God has certain characteristics that He wants His redeemed people to have…
A). Peculiar People
We are to be different than the world and not like them.
B). Passionate People
1). Passionate about God’s
Word
2). Passionate about God’s
Work
We have let the world
define greatness for us. Our society has built itself on the philosophy of the
devil instead of on the wisdom of God. As long as we believe Satan’s big lie
that our lives are insignificant unless we are on top, we will live in constant
state of dejection, worthlessness, and strife.
To overcome this incorrect
way of thinking, we must change audiences. Which audience are we trying to
please: people in this world, or God in heaven?

Sermon #4
The
Gathering of God Taking Men
Titus 2:13
“looking
for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our
Saviour Jesus Christ;”
One of the main principle beliefs of our faith is the return of The Lord Jesus Christ to get His saints out of the earth. This is called the Rapture of the Church. All who are saved when He comes in the clouds (and the dead that are in Christ, in the grave) will be taken out of this world and taken up to be with the Lord. This found in 1 Thessalonians 4, 1 Corinthians 15, Song of Solomon 2, and Revelation 4.
We are here in this body of flesh right now and we go through the trials and tribulations that this world puts us through. But one of the things that keeps the child of God going is the promise of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself coming and receiving us unto Himself. This promise is found in John 14:1-3.
In this message, let us see a few words that describe this return,
I).
The Return of Christ
It is an…
A). Expected Return
He said He was returning to take us home, and He will be back. God said it and that settles it.
1). Trust His Word
2). Receive His Word
3). Believe His Word
B). Encouraging Return
To know that the Lord is returning to take me home really encourages me to stay in the fight and win others to the Lord. When He said He will come again to receive me unto Himself in John 14, that encourages me.
C). Exciting Return
Just knowing that the Lord is coming back at the Rapture is exciting and thrilling. I can not wait to see Him soon.
II).
The Revealing of Christ
His appearing is…
A). A Glorious Revealing
The return of the Lord Jesus is not going to be something that is common or ordinary. His return is going to be with a shout and the voice of the archangel and the dead in Christ lifted out of the grave and transformed from dead to life, from mortal to immortal, from a flesh body to a glorified body
B). A Victorious Revealing
The return of the Lord Jesus is a day of victory, for we shall finally have the victory over sin, death, and the grave. We alone cannot achieve this, it is the working of the Lord.
C). A Marvelous Revealing
III).
The Reign of Christ
He is the…
A). Great King
1). King of kings
2). Lord of lords
The Lord Jesus Christ is the
Great King according to the Gospel of Matthew 5:35.
Revelation 19:16 declares Him King of kings and Lord of lords.
He rules, He reigns, and He runs the show (so to speak)
B). Great God
Ask yourself this question…Is
God good? The answer would be
and should be…ALL THE TIME.
C). Great Physician
Conclusion: To sum it all up, we need to ready to meet the Lord and be ready to let people know that they too need to be ready to meet Jesus Christ. How about it, are you ready to meet Him? If not, why not meet Him now before it is eternally too late?
